Shrub encroachment and mammals in livestock farms of Entre Ríos’ Espinal: a difficult balance to achieve? The Espinal is one of Argentina’s most transformed ecoregions. Despite pressure to change land use towards intensive agricultural activities, some ranchers integrate livestock with the native forest, representing an opportunity to reconcile conservation with production. Currently, the degradation of these forests is usually defined by forage conditions without considering broader environmental criteria. In this study, we use camera traps to compare species richness, encounter rates (as a proxy of use intensity), and composition of the small- and medium-sized mammal assemblage between sites with < 15 % shrub cover (“not degraded”, in ranching-productive terms, n = 18) and > 25 % (“degraded”, in ranching-productive terms, n = 18) in properties with cattle ranching in the Espinal of Entre Ríos province. Additionally, we analyzed the relationship between mammal species richness and encounter rates with the vegetation structure, the proportion and quantity of surrounding land covers, accessibility (as a proxy for hunting pressure), and livestock encounter rate (as a proxy of livestock use intensity). In total, we registered 10 native and two introduced species. The total richness of mammal species was similar between shrubby and not-shrubby sites, but the shrubby sites hosted more species on average (2.8 ± 0.3 versus 1.6 ± 0.3). Besides the shrub coverage, the livestock encounter rate, and the number of surrounding land covers, also significantly influenced the richness and encounter rate of mammals in each site. Although shrubby sites are less favorable for ranching, they would contribute to maintaining the native biodiversity of the Espinal in Entre Ríos and to fostering compatibility between conservation and production.

An approach to the diversity and vertical stratification of the bat assemblage in a tropical rainforest of the Andean Amazonian piedmont, Mocoa, Putumayo, Colombia

, ,

Spatial heterogeneity, especially vertical stratification, is one of the most distinctive features of tropical ecosystems. Although some studies in Colombia have provided evidence on the vertical structure of bat assemblages, none have focused on potentially diverse areas such as the Andean-Amazon piedmont. This study preliminarily analyzes the diversity and vertical stratification of bat assemblages in a tropical rainforest in the Andean-Amazon piedmont. A conglomerate sampling design was established, and six mist nets were set up in the understory and subcanopy (between 10 and 20 m in height) over 18 nights from March to April and June 2022. A total of 181 bats were captured, belonging to 20 species and three families. In the understory, the most abundant species were Myotis nigricans, Carollia perspicillata, and Neoeptesicus cf. orinocensis; the rare species were Hsunycteris thomasi, C. castanea, Nyctinomops cf. laticaudatus, and Artibeus lituratus. In the subcanopy, the most abundant species were Artibeus obscurus, A. lituratus, and Platyrrhinus angustirostris; the rare species were Vampyrodes major and Vampyriscus bidens. Although no differences were observed in species richness or abundance between strata, at the trophic level, nomadic frugivorous bats were more abundant in the subcanopy, while insectivorous bats were found only in the understory. However, it is recommended to increase sampling efforts to strengthen these conclusions and explore the observed trends more thoroughly. Overall, the structure and composition of the assemblage were similar to that of secondary forests undergoing regeneration.

Basic guide to the application of stable isotopes in mammalian ecology. The analysis of stable isotopes is an ally in the study of species that are difficult to observe in nature, as well as species that are currently extinct, overcoming some limitations of more traditional techniques. Isotopes commonly used in the isotopic ecology of living and fossil mammals include nitrogen (δ15N), carbon (δ13C), and oxygen (δ18O), which reflect the food and water ingested and assimilated during the synthesis of biological tissues. However, it is important to have proper sampling and analytical planning to avoid erroneous ecological interpretations. In this review, we address the principles of the stable isotope technique, its main applications, and recommendations for sample preparation, data analysis, and interpretation. Finally, we mention some methodological advances and perspectives that have allowed for an increasingly refined reconstruction of dietary habits and even migratory movements of animals. Particularly, the equipment available in Brazilian universities and other research centers with mass spectrometers has provided greater accessibility to this tool. We hope that Brazilian science keeps pace with such advances and that this guide proves useful for all researchers wishing to start in the field of isotopic ecology.

Comparison of the effectiveness and efficiency of acoustic survey and capture to evaluate bats in Mediterranean temperate forests of central Chile. The study of bats is complex because they are nocturnal flying animals. To record the species that inhabit a site, the international literature generally recommends the combined use of methods. However, in Chile, the environmental authority suggests capturing individuals using mist nets for the evaluation of bats in environmental impact studies. In this study, we compared the effectiveness and efficiency of two methods used for bat assessment: acoustic recording and capture. During the 2013–14 summer season, we evaluated monthly the richness and relative abundance of bats with these methods in remnants of sclerophyllous forest in central Chile. The acoustic record detected 100% of the species potentially present in the study area (n = 6) and recorded the presence of bats at all sampling sites (n = 12). Captures detected only 33% of the potential species and recorded the presence of bats in half of the sampling sites. When comparing the efficiency of the methods, the acoustic recording presented a lower cost based on the number of species detected, where the capture was 159% more expensive. Given the superior effectiveness and efficiency of acoustic recording relative to capture methods, coupled with its non-invasive and wildlife-friendly characteristics that eliminate stress and potential harm to individuals, it is recommended that acoustic recording be considered the primary sampling method to record bats in the environmental evaluation of development projects in central Chile.

“Howling through the city”: a community science project seeking to identify howler monkeys and their threats in northern Argentina

, , , , ,

The continuous habitat degradation and fragmentation are increasing the movement of black and gold howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya) towards urbanized areas in northeast Argentina, looking for shelter and food. Alouatta caraya is categorized as “Vulnerable” in Argentina and usually tolerates moderate levels of habitat modification. Our objective was to use community science as a tool to characterize the distribution and size of A. caraya groups living in urban areas of Corrientes, Argentina, assess their current and potential threats, involve society in the data collection, and participate in the conservation of the species. We carried out semi-structured surveys from March to June 2023 using the Survey 123 application (ArcGIS; ESRI 2011), disseminating them through social networks, local newspapers, and radio news. We obtained 63 responses containing information on geographical location across 19 neighborhoods, howler monkey group size (mean of 5.88 individuals, SD ± 4.14), and the presence of females carrying an infant in 55.5% of sightings. Interactions with the human population and domestic animals were reported in 67% of cases; daily activities such as feeding, resting, howling, and moving were observed on different types of substrates. While 12% of respondents believed that howlers are not exposed to danger, 8.5% considered them to be critically endangered when living in the neighborhood. This is the first study in the city of Corrientes that allows us to understand the effects of the continued unregulated urbanization, the presence and distribution patterns of A. caraya, the use of anthropogenic elements, the specific hazard identification, and the people’s attitudes towards them.

Tendências populacionais do tamanduá-bandeira (Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Linnaeus 1758), na Reserva Biológica do Gurupi

, , ,

Population trends of the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Linnaeus 1758), in the Gurupi Biological Reserve. Despite the looming threat of extinction, limited information is available regarding the populations of the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) in the Amazon region. These animals are rarely observed in dense forests, making data from camera traps invaluable for studying the species. Since 2016, the Gurupi Biological Reserve, an area of Belém endemism, has been monitored through the ICMBio Monitor Project, which utilizes camera traps to collect extensive data on medium and large mammals in the region. Using the dynamic model developed by Dail & Madsen (2011), we aimed to assess the population trend of the giant anteater in this reserve between 2016 and 2022, estimating the growth rate. Additionally, through Bayesian analysis, we investigated how factors such as elevation, distance to rivers, distance to the forest edge, and basal area influence species occupancy within the reserve. The results indicate a trend toward population decline in recent years of monitoring, although the growth rate was not significantly different from zero. Among the variations of predictors for occupancy, only elevation showed a significant rate, with a preference for areas of lower elevation, potentially due to the greater abundance of resources in these areas. This study highlights the critical role of ongoing monitoring in conservation units, particularly to detect potential population declines early and support conservation interventions and further research.

Small rodents in different landscapes of western Misiones province, Argentina: a contribution to the knowledge of the species actual distribution

, , ,

Misiones province, in northeastern Argentina, preserves the southernmost patches of the Atlantic Forest, making it one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world. However, information on small rodents is scarce. This study aimed to describe the rodent communities in different landscapes of western Misiones, Argentina, based on pellets of Tyto furcata. Pellets were collected at six sites along the Paraná river. Rodents were determined to the lowest possible taxonomic level based on cranial, mandibular, and dental characteristics. Craniomandibular remains were obtained from 361 pellets, which belonged to at least 704 individuals. Nine rodent species were identified: Akodon montensis, Brucepattersonius iheringi, Bibimys chacoensis, Calomys cf. C. tener, Holochilus brasiliensis, Necromys lasiurus, Nectomys squamipes, Oligoryzomys flavescens, Thaptomys nigrita, Mus musculus, and Rattus sp. The most common species were M. musculus and O. flavescens, which were found in all the studied sites. Calomys tener, a species that in Argentina inhabits only Misiones and for which there is limited information due to its low abundance, was found in four sites, extending its previously known distribution. Bibimys chacoensis and B. iheringi, which are seldom captured in live trapping studies, were also registered in pellets of T. furcata. This study presents valuable results that contribute to the knowledge of the distribution of small rodents in Misiones.

Non-human primates collected during and after a yellow fever outbreak in eastern Brazil: demographic data, osteological implications, and viral prevalence

, , , , ,

Between 2016 and 2019, a sylvatic yellow fever (YF) outbreak affected Southeast Brazil, prompting a large-scale response to monitor non-human primates (NHP) as sentinels of viral circulation. Here we provide detailed data on NHP specimens collected between 2018 and 2021, presenting sex and estimated age, as well as information on osteological changes and trauma, and YF prevalence in NHP in State of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil. A total of 716 NHP from six taxa were documented across 48 municipalities: Callithrix sp. (N = 672), Callithrix aurita (N = 3), Sapajus nigritus (N = 28), Alouatta guariba (N = 7), Callicebus nigrifrons (N = 2), Leontopithecus rosalia (N = 3), and Leontopithecus chrysomelas (N = 1). Of these, only 19 tested positive for YF virus, predominantly Callithrix sp. (N = 14), followed by Alouatta guariba (N = 2), Callicebus nigrifrons (N = 2), and Leontopithecus rosalia (N = 1). Most Callithrix sp. specimens—hybrids of C. jacchus and C. penicillata—originated from urban centers, particularly Rio de Janeiro and Niterói. Notably, trauma-related injuries were recorded in 160 Callithrix sp., peaking during the outbreak, likely due to human aggression driven by misconceptions about YF transmission and/or roadkill events. Additionally, among 127 Callithrix sp. and three C. aurita specimens processed as skins and skeletons, 90 revealed pathological-like changes in teeth, skull, and appendicular skeleton, including porosity, translucency, bone remodeling, darkened spots, and fractures. While not directly linked to YF infection, these findings contribute to a broader understanding of NHP pathology and population health. This study represents one of the largest and most systematically curated collections of NHP from an epizootic event, providing an invaluable resource for disease ecology and conservation research. Our results emphasize the importance of long-term specimen preservation for monitoring emerging infectious diseases and assessing anthropogenic impacts on wildlife populations.

I only care about the soil! Analysis of the distribution and habitat use of the screaming hairy armadillo (Chaetophractus vellerosus) in the Endangered subpopulation of eastern Buenos Aires province, Argentina. The subpopulation of the screaming hairy armadillo (Chaetophractus vellerosus) in the east of the province of Buenos Aires is categorized as Endangered, with calcareous mining being its main threat. The aims of this study were to update the distribution area of this subpopulation, evaluate the effects of environmental factors and land use on its presence, and determine the lost and/or suboptimal habitat for the species. To look for indirect evidence of C. vellerosus (burrows and food probes), 56 random transects of 1000 m × 12 m were carried out (37 in calcareous-sandy soil and 19 in humic soil). In addition to soil type, vegetation height and cover, distance to the nearest urban center, degree of mining exploitation, cattle load, and number of dogs were recorded. To evaluate the effect of soil type, 19 calcareous-sandy transects were paired with 19 humic transects. For the other characteristics, only calcareous-sandy transects were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models. Only 25 transects were positive, all in calcareous-sandy soils, finding 2594 evidences. No model explained the association between the other characteristics and the presence of the species. Based on these results, a potential distribution area of less than 118 km2 was delimited. According to the most important threats (mining, Provincial Route #11 and urbanization), it was estimated that 26% of its habitat was lost or is suboptimal. Therefore, the conservation of sandy soils is key for the survival of the Endangered screaming hairy armadillo subpopulation.

Dental development in Subulo gouazoubira and Mazama rufa (Arctiodactyla: Cervidae), and its application for age determination in deers. The use of dentition and dental traits for age determination is common in studies of several taxa. In particular, the genetically determined process of forming and replacing molariform teeth is frequently used for age determination in mammals. In the present study, radiographic analyses were condected to investigate the monthly chronology of dental development, such as the appearance of tooth-forming cysts, crown and root mineralization, tooth eruption, and tooth exchange in Subulo gouazoubira and Mazama rufa. Subjects were anesthetized and radiographed, and radiological findings were organized from the first to the twenty-fifth month of age. Once the monthly stages were defined, these data were compared with four S. gouazoubira alive and 31 osteological preparations of heads (25 S. gouazoubira, three M. rufa, two M. nana, and one M. jucunda). Of these examinations, 22 were identified as having between one and 24 months of age, and the other 13 were 25 months old or older. All stages listed were observed in the age determinations performed, confirming the monthly accuracy of the technique.
