The fossil record of Bibimys Massoia, 1979 (Rodentia) in Argentina. Consideration on the Scapteromyini (Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) and their distribution during the Pliocene-Holocene in the Pampean Region. New remains of Bibimys cf. B. torresi Massoia, 1979 recovered in sediments which represents the Upper Holocene from Centinela del Mar (General Alvarado County, Buenos Aires Province) are analyzed. This new record adds to that recently mentioned from Upper Holocene sediments at Cueva Tixi. On the basis of this remains and recent individuals we describe in detail the jaw and teeth (including root patterns) morphology, and compare it with that Scapteromys aquaticus, S. tumidus, Bibimys labiosus and Kunsia. Bibimys torresi shows a mesolof/id small but clearly present in young individuals, and that it can be referred to a group characterized here as “complex tetralophodonts”, which represents the transitions in the molar pattern from a pentalofodont ancestor towards a molar morphology that agrees better with adaptations to perisylvan environments. Additional considerations about the nomenclatorial status, systematic, past and recent geographic distribution and phylogenetic relationships of Bibimys, Kunsia and Scapteromys (genera included in the tribe Scapteromyini), are made. Judging for the fossil record from Pampean Region, this tribe had a more southward distribution during part of the Plio-Pleistocene/Holocene, therefore suggesting wetter and warmer environmental conditions than the present one.

Distribution of the armadillos (Mammalia, Dasypodidae) in the pampean region (Argentine Republic) during the Holocene. Paleoenvironmental interpretations. Since their first records in the late Miocene (13 millon years) the armadillos constitute one of the principal components of the Pampean region mammal fauna. During the last 10000 years, the distribution of these species in the Pampean region underwent variations as a consequence of climatic and environmental changes. The goal of this paper is to establish the history of the armadillos distribution in the Pampean region, particularly in the Buenos Aires Province. The paleontological and archeological records of the different species are analized, within the paleoenvironmental schemes proposed for the late Pleistocene-Holocene in middle latitudes of Argentina. Twenty one archeological and paleontological sites were considered and the following taxa were recorded: Eutatus seguini (an extinct species) and Chaetophractus villosus, C. vellerosus, Zaedyus pichiy, Tolypeutes matacus and Dasypus hybridus (all living species). The following conclusions can be inferred: 1) During the early Holocene the association C. villosusE. seguini, with the addition of Z. pichiy, is present in Tandilia and Interserrana areas. The armadillos recorded in this period suggest arid and semiarid environmental conditions and, probably, annual mean temperatures lower than the present ones. 2) During the middle Holocene the association C. villosusZ. pichiy is still present in central and southern Buenos Aires Province, with a probable retraction of T. matacus in Tandilia and Interserrana areas. This association indicates an advance of the Patagonic conditions; it doesn’t show the warm and humid pulse pointed by other authors. 3) The record of the late Holocene is characterized mainly by the association C. villosusZ. pichiyD. hybridus. Between 3000–1500 years before present, armadillos typical of the northern warm climates (T. matacus and D. hybridus) along with C. villosus, are recorded in the northeast of the province. At the same time, Patagonic conditions are still present in the Interserrana Area, reflected by the presence of C. villosusZ. pichiy. Around 1500 years before present, the association C. villosusD. hybridus is already established in northern and eastern Buenos Aires, whereas Z. pichiy is absent. A transition toward the present humid-temperate conditions is recorded to the south; this is shown for the range expansion of D. hybridus.

Annotated keys for identifying small mammals living in or near Nahuel Huapi National Park or Lanín National Park, southern Argentina

The mammalian fauna of northwestern Patagonia, Argentina (at about 40° SL) is composed of a rich mixture of species that range in a wide variety of habitats and elevations, from lowland steppe and thorn scrub to highland desert. The natural history of the small mammal fauna of this region has been poorly known. In an effort to fulfill this gap I have assembled a series of keys for the proper identification of this peculiar fauna. These annotated keys provide a better chance for the correct determination of 37 species of volant and nonvolant small mammals, and general comments on their taxonomy, habits and distribution. Photographs of skull, mandibles and molar teeth are illustrated for most of the species.

Analysis of trap association among Argentina’s wild cricetid species. We assessed differences in trappability of Calomys laucha, Oxymycterus rufus, Akodon azarae, Akodon dolores, Calomys musculinus and Calomys venustus by sex, age and sampling periods, with different trap types. The sampling system was trapping fines with 20 or 30 stations. One Sherman live trap (23 × 8 × 9.5 cm) and one snap trap (10.5 × 4.5 cm) were placed at each station. An independence test was applied to determine association of a given species with respect to a given trap type, regarding the factors age and sampling period. In those cases where the influence of habitat and sex factors in the trappability of species were analyzed, a test of independence for these three factors was applied. The incidence of sampling period and sex in the selection of trap type turned out to be non significant, although there was a significant dependence between species and trap type. Consequently, A. azarae, C. musculinus and C. laucha did not show association with any trap type, whereas C. venustus, A. dolores and O. rufus showed a marked association with snap traps. lndividuals of C. musculinus of different age showed differences in trappability. From what is stated above, it is evident that there is a need to evaluate, in each sample design, the type of trap to be used, or the necesary adjustments when comparing population numbers among species.

The impact of an eruption of Volcán Hudson on small mammals in Argentine Patagonia

Sixteen months after an explosion of Volcán Hudson had covered parts of Santa Cruz Province in Argentina with 5 to 15 cm of ash that had killed thousands of sheep, the native mice were present and thriving. Eligmodontia, Phyllotis, and Reithrodon were present in greater-than-expected numbers, and Abrothrix xanthorhinus was present in normal numbers. All were reproducing vigorously and appeared to be healthy. Molar teeth of Eligmodontia and Phyllotis were not abraded noticeably more than in other regions.
